So, here’s the ultimate question that I want to address: Why work with a dietitian when there are SO many other avenues offered out there for you to take to “get healthier”? Heres the answer: You should work with a dietitian BECAUSE there are so many other avenues offered out there!
You can go almost anywhere now and get fancy protein shakes, “energy boosting” drinks, and probably some nutrition advice too from the random person who works behind the counter. You can head to your nearest health food store or GNC and get lots of unsolicited health advice from the worker who just started there a month ago. That may be a little blunt– but I’ve witnessed it, I’ve been OFFERED it without asking while stopping by for a protein bar, and now that I’ve truly put my dietitian self out into the world I’m seeing the misinformation in all it’s glory.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some amazing non-dietitians out there who can truly give you good advice- I KNOW that there are. That’s also not to say that every dietitian out there is a good fit for you, because that’s absolutely not true either. Just like any health care provider, you need to find one who you relate to, who you trust, and someone who understands your goals. Have you ever been to a doctor’s appointment where you just felt like the provider wasn’t a good fit for you? You should be on the lookout for that same feeling when you’re trying to find a dietitian to work with.
So, why work with a dietitian? Number one is to help you work through misinformation. Dietitians go through at least four years of school and then an additional 1200 hours of supervised practice (usually runs about a year) before we’re even allowed to sit for our exam. We’re also required to keep up with continuing education credits which means we’re staying up to date with all of the latest research and information in the nutrition world.
With that being said, working with a dietitian is a commitment- mentally, financially, and in terms of time. Not just for you, but for me too! The BEST results always come from a place where we are both 100% committed to seeing results.
How many diets have you tried in your lifetime? How many times have you tried to lose weight? What would life look like for you if you never had to “diet” again?
If something doesn’t work, I can help you troubleshoot WHY it’s not working. Most people can share with you what worked for THEM, when you work with me I can help you figure out what will work for YOU.
If any of this resonated with you, if you’re as tired as me of the overflow of misinformation and unsolicited nutrition advice– reach out to me.
